Get in to Kolkata
The international airport at Kolkata is called the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport (Airport code CCU). The Emirates, the Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways provide direct connections to Kolkata from the West. The Emirates has two daily flights to Kolkata from Dubai. The other option is to fly in to Delhi or Mumbai and connect to Kolkata. Several airlines fly into Kolkata from the east, including Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, Dragon Air, Air Asia, and China Eastern Airlines. The airport is along the northern border of the city of Kolkata (slightly to then north-east). It is about 17 kilometres from the centre of the city, and about 18 kilometres from the ITC Sonar Hotel, the venue of the event. See Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport for more information.
Take a prepaid taxi from the airport to the city. It costs about Rs. 200.
There are two major railway stations in Kolkata - Howrah (not in Kolkata actually, it's in the adjoining city Howrah) and Sealdah. A new terminus station called 'Kolkata' has also started functioning since 2005, but presently it accommodates very few trains. Take a prepaid taxi from the station to the venue. Howrah station is about 14 kms from the venue and costs about Rs. 150.
In and around Kolkata
If you are coming from the airport or one of the railway stations, it is better to hire a taxi from the prepaid taxi booth. In this case you have to pay the total fare in the taxi booth and get the receipt. The receipt has two parts - one part is for your reference and the other part you will need to handover to the taxi driver only after you reach your desired destination. The Taxi driver will get his payment by submitting or producing this other part to the Pre-paid Taxi counter. The prepaid taxi fare is marginally higher than normal, but it is a surer and safer mode of transport.
There is an underground service from Dumdum Station to Kavi Subhas (New Garia Area). The details of the metro route can be found here.
Kolkata is warm and humid most of the year around. However, the winter months, typically from November to February, are cool, sunny, dry and very pleasant. During winter months the temperature ranges from about 10 to 20 Celsius and the relative humidity is around 50%. Light woollen clothing is necessary during winter in Kolkata.
